1) Describe when and how you used this strategy to help you understand the novel better?
My strategy is that I ask questions if I don’t understand the book. I am a better at doing this in a smaller group for example, the meaning of a word, a concept like poverty, understanding why a character did the things they did.
Give examples of activities we did in class and how they were connected to the strategy you chose?
We asked questions and we went on the blog and wrote things about Esperanza.
How did this strategy change over time? Did you make any adjustments? What might you do differently next time?
I would like to ask more detailed questions when I read.
Discuss a strategy you did not use, but would like to try out next time?
My next strategy is to work in a small group because I like working with other people and sometimes we can help each other.
2) There were many themes and ideas In the book Esperanza Rising.
What was the one I have chosen?
I would like to write about the theme of poverty.
How did you understand it?
Esperanza starts life rich and ends up poor.
How did it change throughout the book?
She becomes rich through having wonderful relationships with others.
- Esperanza Rising has a very interesting history especially about Mexico and California. This is what I have learnt by reading the book.
The Spanish in 1521 went to Mexico and had a colony and that is why they talk Spanish.
In the 1860s Mexico was occupied by France.
I found an interesting quotation in the book Esperanza Rising. Pg.15: ‘Esperanza remembered a time when Hortensia had not taken care of them. She was a Zapotec Indian from Oaxaca, with a short, solid figure and blue-black hair in a braid down her back.’ In the book this shows some Mexicans are servants, and the lighter people are higher in class than darker people.
I learnt there was a revolution in Mexico in the 19th century. There was a crisis in 1929 and throughout the 30s. There were many people who lacked a job. There were too many people and not enough jobs.
Some people travelled to other countries to get jobs for instance the U.S..Connection- Esperanza also did this.
Culture:
When a girl reaches the age of 15 years old, the girl has a party and she can start courting boys. It is called ‘quinceaneras’.
Their food is: nachos with guacamole
3) “She remembered standing on a chair with her arms outstretched like a bird ready for flight.” Pg 61
This is a simile. This shows us how rich Esperanza is. Hortensia is dressing Esperanza. It shows she is a high flyer and that when she loses her money she will fall from a great height.
Metaphor. “Esperanza is the sun.”
This is a metaphor. I like this because Esperanza is a bright person and at the end of the book she shines out of her difficulties and makes her hard life into something much better.
Personification. “The house moaned and whistled.” Pg 39 I like this because it tells us that the house is upset because Esperanza’s dad is dead.
